additional information

Marten Toonder created the most famous daily newspaper comic strip in the Netherlands between 1947 and 1986: the Bommel saga. This so-called ‘comic novel’ is named after the main character, Olivier B. Bommel. Bommel is a bear and the stories only feature animals; all of them are of course modelled on real people. Toonder drew and wrote 177 stories about Bommel, which always develop more or less along the same plot lines. Heer Bommel, a bear who is actually a lord, who lives in an ancestral castle and for whom money is no object, repeatedly ends up in sticky situations in all the stories. His ‘young friend’ Tom Poes, a small white cat, always rescues Bommel from trouble with a trick.
