synopsis
Filmmaker Catherine van Campen and her crew have traveled to the Syrian border region almost ten times over the past four years to follow a number of children living in the Zaatari refugee camp in Jordan. A completely new city has emerged in the middle of the desert under the scorching sun. A city that consists of 80 percent children. From the perspective of four children from different social backgrounds, we see and feel what it is like to grow up in this city; the Zaatari refugee camp. A place with few resources or prospects for improvement, but with room for dreams. Despite their situation, the children appear to have the ability to make something out of nothing; a prop becomes a football, two insects a zoo. Zaatari Djinn is a rare intimate film about the resilience of children who see reality a lot rosier than adults. Zaatari may be a place without history or future, but it is also a home.
